Liberty Utilities announced today their appreciation to the Governor for signing Senate Bill 577.

One provision of SB 577 would allow methane from biological sources, also known as renewable natural gas, to qualify under New Hampshire’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). New Hampshire is one of several states that includes a requirement for utilities to purchase credits from renewable heating sources as part of its RPS. SB 577 makes it clear that renewable natural gas, biological methane from anaerobic digesters and landfills, can be used meet RPS obligations. Liberty Utilities estimates that this provision will save electric customers approximately $4 million over ten years. Liberty is currently working to develop a project to serve our natural gas customers with Renewable Natural Gas produced right here in New Hampshire.

“SB 577 becoming law is a win-win,” said Susan Fleck, president of Liberty Utilities New Hampshire operations. “I want to applaud Governor Sununu, Senators Feltes, Avard and Bradley for their leadership on this issue. This change will encourage investments in biological methane collection in New Hampshire, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lowers energy costs and helps us tap an in-state resource to serve our natural gas customers,” concluded Fleck.
